چکیده

In this review we provide an overview of the components of the spermatozoa playing an important role in reproductive success beyond fertilization, showing the relationship between the integrity of the diverse elements and the development of a healthy offspring. The present knowledge about fish sperm chromatin organization, epigenetic modifications of DNA and histones and sperm-borne RNAs, essential in controlling embryo development, is summarized, pointing out the possibility of using specific genes or transcripts as biomarkers of sperm quality. Data about commercial species are reported when available and more detailed information about zebrafish sperm is presented. Considering the implications that the integrity of sperm genome and epigenome has on the preservation of a proper genotype and phenotype in the progeny, the methods applied for the study of chromatin damage and for the study of transcriptome are described. Moreover we discuss some injuring agents affecting paternal information, from the presence of contaminants in the aquatic environment, to the reproductive *Manuscript Click here to download Manuscript: Herrez et al revised aquaculture.docx Click here to view linked References

Cross-species sperm-FISH assays for chemical testing and assessing paternal risk for chromosomally abnormal pregnancies.

The father, like the mother, can transmit genetic defects to his offspring that are detrimental for normal development and a healthy life. Epidemiological studies have identified associations between several paternal exposures and abnormal reproductive outcomes, but these types of studies are inherently complex and expensive, and the risk factors for the paternal contribution to abnormal reprod...

I-37: Genome Instability and DNA Damage in Male Somatic and Germ Cells Expressed as Chromosomal Microdeletion and Aneuploidy Is A Major Cause of Male Infertility

Background: Sperm chromatin insufficiencies leading to low sperm count and quality, infertility and transmission of chromosomal microdeletion and aneuploidies to next generations can be due to exposure to environmental pollutions, chemicals and natural or manmade ionizing radiation. In this project which has continued for more than 10 years and is unique in many technical aspects in Iran and in...

APEX/Ref-1 (apurinic/apyrimidic endonuclease DNA-repair gene) expression in human and ascidian (Ciona intestinalis) gametes and embryos.

In recent years, the impact of sperm DNA damage on fertility has become an important issue. The different technologies developed to check sperm DNA fragmentation lead to the same conclusion: DNA damage negatively impacts upon reproductive processes. Oocyte DNA repair capacity is one of the cues to understanding embryo developmental arrest. APEX/Ref-1 (apurinic/apyrimidic endonuclease) is an enz...

Disruption of maternal DNA repair increases sperm-derived chromosomal aberrations.

Male and female germ cells can transmit genetic defects that lead to pregnancy loss, infant mortality, birth defects, and genetic diseases in offspring; however, the parental origins of transmitted defects are not random, with de novo mutations and chromosomal structural aberrations transmitted predominantly by sperm. We tested the hypotheses that paternal mutagenic exposure during late spermat...
